As you are no doubt aware Mother’s Day is coming up this Sunday. Mother’s Day is a day to show appreciation and thank the mother figures in our lives, whether it be our mums, step mothers, relatives, guardians, close family friends, or another special women that you look up to and are thankful for.
Mother’s Day is also a time to reflect and appreciate that for some Mother’s Day is a sad day. It’s a day to remember, but it’s also a day to acknowledge the pain of losing a loved one, a child, or the potential to be a mum. To all the women in the world, we honour you.
We have just as many mothers in the shop as we have children, and we often hear them say “wow this brings back memories” or “I remember how much fun I had when I played with this as a child”. It warms our heart to see a mother’s face light up with memories that have significant meaning to them.
Mother’s Day in Australia stems from American and U.K. traditions, and is also celebrated on the same day as in the U.S. (second Sunday in May). It is said however that Australia started the tradition of giving gifts on Mother’s Day. It apparently all started with a lady named Janet Hayden from Leichhardt who started collecting gift donations in 1924 to pass on to lonely, aged mothers.
Mother’s Day fell on May 10th in 1908 and on that Mother’s Day it is believed that Anna Jarvis –the founder of Mother’s Day in America sent white carnations for a Mother’s Day service in West Virginia. From that year on giving white carnations is particularly symbolic to some people.
Fun Fact: It wasn’t until 1914 that America recognised mother’s day as a celebration
The celebration of Mother’s Day can be traced back to ancient Greeks and Romans who would honour their mother goddesses Cybele and Reah by holding festivals in their honour .
Flowers, chocolates and cards are amongst the most popular gifts to give on Mother’s Day, but if you would like to stand out from the crowd and give your mother figure something unique and quirky, and something that brings back childhood memories then keep reading as you might just discover the perfect gift.
We have picked out the toys that get the most attention from mothers when they step into our shop:
Paper Dolls – Paper dolls are doll shaped figures that can be cut out of paper or cardboard and come with outfits, hair styles and accessories that can also be cut out, changed and attached to the doll. Paper dolls have been around almost as long as paper and have been extremely popular due to their inexpensive nature. The oldest paper doll card that has been recorded was printed in 1650 in Southern Germany.
Decorate and wrap set – Make the wrapping on your present unique with our ‘My little decorator gifts’. This cute set from Djeco comes with stickers, labels, stamps, tags and string. With this kit the present will look too good to open!
Puzzles – Who doesn’t love a jigsaw puzzle? People have been enjoying jigsaw puzzles since the 1760s, when European map makers first stuck their maps to wood and then cut it into pieces. Puzzles for adults later emerged in the early 1900s. What is the attraction to puzzles? Is it the feeling that you are challenging the brain? The satisfaction felt when it is complete? Or is it discovering a puzzle’s beauty as you place piece by piece? Have you ever walked by an unfinished jigsaw puzzle and didn’t stop to try and fit a piece? Puzzles draw you in.
Books – Was there a particular book that your mother used to read or had read to her when she was younger? We have the classics here, Heidi, Little Women, Robin Hood, The Secret Garden, Anne of Green Gables just to name a few.
A bag of lollies – Everybody loves lollies and we have a huge variety that you can pick and mix from to make the perfect little lolly bag. Perfect for those with a sweet tooth!
Knitting Dolls - Sometimes called spool knitting as they used to be made by hammering nails into an empty spool of thread., the traditional Knitting Nancy is a perfect little gift for the crafty among us, and for those mums who just have everything. It’s the gift that keeps on giving as she can knit her own scarf to keep herself warm!
Flower Press - People have enjoyed pressing flowers for hundreds of years, whether it is for sentimental, collecting or scientific reasons. We often hear mothers and grandmothers talk about when they used to press flowers out of a garden and put them into a scrapbook at a young age., coming back to them many years later. Such a simple but long lasting craft that preserves memories for decades.
Cupcake Sets - If mum is into cooking we have got awesome cupcake sets that would be perfect to make your cupcakes that you make her stand out.
Games - As mothers, we love to spend time with the whole family. There is nothing we love more than to have the whole family sitting down together bonding and playing a family game. It is a simple way to bring a smile to everyone’s faces. We have a large selection of family board games for the whole family; some challenging and strategic and others are simple and fun.
